The similarities and differences between Lamb to the slaughter and The way up to heaven

Sadly again, I have been given another LA assignment to do and must blog about it in order to get ACE points. So please bear with me and I will be putting up a new post some time today. In addition, please give me more comments so that I will get more ACE points or else i would not be able to fulfil the requirements.
The two stories that I will blogging about today is Lamb to the slaughter and The way up to heaven which are both written by the famous Roald Dahl(favourite author of many people when they were still young)
The similarities are that in the end both husbands die.The similarities of the two stories is that both have the same theme which is lying and deception. Both is about the wife killing their husband whether directly or indirectly. I will start with a brief introduction to Lamb to the slaughter.
Mary Maloney is the wife of Patrick Maloney.Mary Maloney is a good housekeeper and keeps the house very clean. She always does as per what her husband askes her to do what and she is willing to do anything to please him.Patrick Maloney is probably caring and takes his wife out every Thursday. He is probably treating Mary well as Mary is deeply in love with him and enjoys the quiet moments in which they share together the most. She feels that her life is very contented and very peaceful. His wife, Mary is totally in love with her husband and he awaits his return from work every evening .She prepares whisky for her husband to drink when he came home. When he returned, Mary enjoyed his company and the presence of him feel almost like a sunbather feels the Sun. When Patrick told Mary that he wanted to leave her probably for another woman , she could not believe it and she was angered by her husband's decision and made a drastic move to the extent of using a leg of lamb to murder him.She uses the same amount of care and planing to carry out the murder as she used to take care of the house. She did not even feel regretful or guilty at all for the drastic move in which she had made. She was completely emotionless after what she has done.Based on her outer appearence and actions, she seems like the kind of woman that will be easily contented as long as er husband treats her well. But under all that layers of skin, she is actually someone who is rather emotionless and scheming.I believe that she need not go to the extent of killing Patrick Maloney as in the process she has made their child fartherless and the child will be very sad when he/she finds out that his/her own mother murdered someone. That is why as the saying goes"Never judge a book by its cover".
The brief summary of Way up to heaven is about two people, Mr and Mrs Foster. The live in a old gloomy house in New York and had few visitors. Mrs Foster is a person who dreads being late, gets nervous at the thought of being late and will be unable to sit down and keep still.she will start to flutter and fidget from room to room.Mr Foster likes to irritate Mrs Foster by trying to delay her from going to somewhere as much as possible and by keeping her waiting, he seems to enjoy how anxious she gets when she is nervous. One January morning, Mrs Foster was going to France to visit her daughter and grand children. Mr Foster took his own sweet time to come out of the house and tried all sorts of methods and ways to delay Mrs Foster. When they were in the car, Mr Foster suddenly said that he could not find a present for his daughter and went into the house again to find it. Mrs Foster then notices the present was tucked down the side of the car seat.
She then decided to go into the house to inform Mr Foster but when she went in, she heard the noise of the lift not working and was now stuck in betwwen the two floors. Upon hearing that , she stops and closed the door. In the end,she manages to catch the plane and went to France to visit her daughter to spend some quality time with her daughter and grandchildren without a care in the world. It was as if she was like a bird that had been trapped in a cage for ages and finally set free.
Six weeks later, she returns to her house only to find that something smelled a little funny. She walked swiftly around the house appearing to be investigating something and then confirmed it. Obviously, she knew that her husband had died in the lift as he was being trapped in the lift six weeks ago and the strange smell must have came from his body in which was most probably rotting or decomposing. From my point of view,I think she seems rather happy as the death of her husband has stopped all the delaying which her husband does and(I think) she will bacome less paranoid.
The difference about the story is that Mary Maloney was only tortured by her husband for a few minutes before she killing him with a leg of lamb while Mrs Foster allowed her husband suffer the torture and misery that he had experienced while he was being trapped in the lift for six weeks.
In my opinion, I think that Mrs Foster's case of murdering her husband was more cruel in a way that her husband died a little by little, and will feel that his strenght is ebbing away with every passing second in which he is trapped in the lift. While in Mary Maloney's case, she kill him in less than a few seconds. This means that Mr Foster was left trapped in the lift for at least a few days in the lift without food and water and eventually died due to the lack of things which humans require in order to survive.
The similarity on the theme, lying and deception means that Mr Foster lied about the fact that he did not bring the present for his daughter and in Lamb to the slaughter, the part on deception is that the character of Patrick Maloney.Mary Maloney and Mrs Foster changed from the beginning to the end of the story. These are two woman which I would never want to meet cause my life would gone in a matter of minutes.

  2. I agree with you about the differences and similarities. I think Mary Maloney was not as cruel as Mrs Foster because Mrs Foster made her husband diein pain. I really like the pictures of Lamborghini on your blog which has a cool dark background which makes the picture outstanding.
    PLS comment on my blog.
    Thanks.

  3. actually, you don't have to worry about losing your life by meeting both women unless you deceived them.never did read the books, but from what you summarized, i think the lies actually came from their husband.

  4. Below is just my perspective in effect to the summary of the story you blogged about.

    Mary,
she did all she could to maintain her family. she thought the man she love deeply, loved her back as well. Thus she become a contented "small family woman".she wanted nothing else except to love him & provide a warm, comfortable house for him to return to everyday after work. Yet at the end of the day, he had an affair and wanted to leave her so she killed him.

Her method of solving the issue was rather extreme.but emotions are a difficult thing to grasp. this case was simply betrayed love turned into hate isn't it? He was the core of her existence, her life revolve around him.And then he wanted to leave her. It's like cutting off her oxygen supply.

I believe everyone has a deep, dark side to them.It will only surface when they are hit right in the face by harsh reality. I won't say she's emotionless. I would say she's overcome by the hurt and betrayal from the man she loved so deeply that it drove her insane.simply put, love turned into hate.

You can only hate a person to the extend of killing them if you once cared a lot for the person.I'm not talking about series killers like jack the ripper or ted bundy here. They kill innocent strangers.I'm talking about a woman being betrayed by the core existence of her life, her "oxygen supply".

Since patrick, her "oxygen supply" decided to leave her for another. It would indirectly mean shes not going to survive since her life revolve around him and only for him. I wouldn't say she's right, but i wouldn't blame her either.Women that deeply in love are selfish. No woman will be willing to share the man she love deeply.

Since she can't live without him, and he's definitely going to leave her.She killed him.She would rather cut off her "oxygen supply" and die soon, than to die alone while her "oxygen supply" provides "oxygen" for another woman. It's not that she's emotionless or that she don't even feel the least bit of guilt. It's more of a relief,a closure to her. The fact lies that either way she's not going to live without him. Thus, she rather die with! him than to die alone while he's in the arms of another woman.

  5. Mrs Foster

I think she had simply reached her threshold.
Like you said,Mrs Foster is a person who dreads being late, gets nervous at the thought of being late and will be unable to sit down and keep still.she will start to flutter and fidget from room to room.Yet on the other hand. Her husband likes to irritate her by delaying her schedule. He seems to enjoy her being anxious and nervous.

It's actually some kind of mental torment for her. For years, Mr Foster deliberately put her through that kind of anxiety simply because he enjoys seeing her getting all anxious and nervous.

I agree with you that she's rather cruel & extreme. But in a way, she's just trying to get out of a abusive life her husband gave her. Yes, abusive. mental abuse is as bad or even worse than physical abuse. Mr Foster constantly lies to her to delay her schedule, knowing very well it will put her on the edge. I'm surprised she didn't suffer from anxiety breakdown throughout her entire marriage.

Tit for a Tat. What Mr Foster went through during his last few moments of his life was the same as what he had put her through throughout their marriage. He deliberately made her anxious all the time. With anxiousness and nervousness, comes difficulty in breathing.

I think the amount of oxygen level in the lift can only last Mr Foster say around a day or two at the most.So besides lack of oxygen, i don't think food and water was the cause of his death.

Was a former Ace Lit student. These are just my own perspectives to the stories you summarized. To each their own view points. Don't mind me if you think what i said was rather warped. And yes, now you got me intrigued by the stories. shall get to reading them. =)

  6. I appreciate the effort put into summarizing the two stories, thus helping people like myself who have never read the books.
As for lamb to the slaughter, I agree that this story is more of a love turned to hate tragedy. It is unlikely a person can hate another to want to kill him/her unless he/she has deeply hurt the former. Likewise, the second story depicts a woman trying to seek escape from the very person who constantly tortures her mentally, by ignoring her trapped husband and leaving him to die. However, I feel that these two stories show two different extreme measures taken to deal with the situations. Perhaps emotions sometimes drive people mad and they end up doing things without logic. Nevertheless, no doubt these are merely stories, such cases do happen in this "crazy" world I would say. Indeed, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".
